The Cloud Chasers – Legacy of a dream

Festival Logo

After the sudden death of artist Rudi van de Wint, his sons Ruud and Gijs inherit his unfinished artwork De Nollen, a lyrical landscape where nature, painting, sculpture and architecture melt into one another. Through hard work the brothers devote themselves to keeping alive their fathers dream, but with growing ambitions, tensions heighten. When plans for a public museum become more concrete, the brotherly bond and their idyllic life in their fathers artwork comes under pressure.

Gulsah is a demanding director, but knows exactly how to inspire to bring out the best in her collaborators. At the same time there is also a softer, more emotional side, which is probably why her films are able to tell such layered and intimidate stories without losing sight of a bigger picture.

It was a real pleasure working together with Gulsah on this film. Especially because she liked working out ideas on the editing timeline herself. This created a very intuitive shorthand for exchanging thoughts and ideas. Almost as if we were editing the film in unison.

"A Shakespearian drama of epic and intimate proportions, which never loses focus or urgency during its artistic and even absurdist battle."

Jury Statement – Dutch Film Festival

"The film wonderfully captures the emotional struggle of Rudi’s two sons and heirs in gorgeous images."

Arno Haijtema – De Volkskrant

"This very alluring documentary follows two brothers through past and presents. By intercutting archival footage of their father and his art with scenes of themselves, the film portrays how their lives become one with the origin of the art and landscape of De Nollen."
